Not so groovy baby

DOUBLE OH BEHAVE: Nigel Powers (Michael Caine), Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles) and Austin Powers (Michael Myers).

Goldmember (ENGLISH)

Cast: Mike Myers, Beyonce Knowles, Michael Caine

<15,0m,,0>Dir: Jay Roach

WHEN THE first Austin Powers movie came out, it swept people away on a wave of infectious fun. Mike Myers as the International Man of Mystery with the language and clothes from the swinging sixties, a forest of chest hair, standard issue government spectacles and tombstone teeth was a rather unlikely super spy.

People, however, adored him and his arch nemesis Dr Evil (Myers again). The second instalment chastely called Austin Powers 2 in India introduced Evil's clone, the delightful Mini-Me and the not so nice Fat Bastard.

Goldmember, the third instalment unfortunately sinks under its own weight. At 87 minutes, it still feels long and laboured. Mike Myers returns as Austin Powers, Dr Evil, Fat Bastard (what a pity) and Goldmember. Michael Caine is Austin's dad the highly decorated spy Nigel Powers while Beyonce Knowles (from Destiny's Child) plays Foxxy Cleopatra, Austin's sidekick from the `70s.

The film begins with Steven Spielberg shooting the new Austin Powers movie, "somewhere in Utah" with Tom Cruise as Austin Powers, Gwyneth Paltrow as Dixie Enormous, Kevin Spacey as Dr Evil, Danny DeVito as Mini-Me and John Travolta as Goldmember. And you almost wish that was the picture you were going to see. Well, that is not to be.

Coming to the film that we get to see, Goldmember, a wicked Dutchman, kidnaps Austin's dad and takes him to the `70s. The only person who can help Austin find his dad is Dr Evil who is incarcerated in a maximum-security prison. Dr Evil asks to be transferred to a less secure facility in exchange for information. Austin goes back to the 70s while Evil escapes and joins hands with Goldmember to create Preparation H and rule the world.

While all that made the earlier two movies so enjoyable are there like the bizarre shadow play and the weird editing that comes up with these many synonyms for a certain part of anatomy, they feel jaded and the sequences involving Fat Bastard are just not funny.

The earlier films were hits mainly because of the Austin Powers character - he was so totally out of synch that he was super cool. Goldmember is not about Austin, it does too much and ends up spreading itself too thin and kills whatever comedy there is in the situation.

The Austin Powers franchise has become like the James Bond franchise it spoofs and fans of the earlier movies would definitely watch this one. However, it would be a real tragedy if Goldmember were your introduction to the International Man of Mystery. Yeah Baby Yeah!
