Metro cultural round-up

An engaging kavi sammelanam followed by a seminar of sorts on the evolving trends in Telugu poetry marked the anniversary of the Visakha Padya Kavitha Sadassu, an association of Uttarandhra Telugu writers. Organised at the Rotary auditorium in Anakapalle, it turned out to be a treat as verdure as that of the jaggery for which the town is noted. The chief guest, K. Butchiraju, inaugurated the session presided over by V. Appalaswamy Naidu, principal of the AMAL Degree College. Noted litterateurs, Bulusu Venkateswarlu, Sishtla Venkata Rao and K. Kota Rao, delivered enlightening discourses on classical poetry. M. Venkateswara Rao, Ivaturi Goureesam, Kota Rao, Battula Sivaramakrishna, R.V.K. Rao, STPC Srinivasacharyulu and B. Nageswara Rao rendered their poems, which reflected their awareness of the ills that cripple society.

The renowned philomath, writer-poet and esteemed scholar in Telugu and Sanskrit, Raanapragada Seshasai, was felicitated on the occasion. He was the choice this year for the association's annual literary award instituted by one of its founder-members, Dr.A. Durga Prasad, who is now settled in Boston, in memory of his father Annavajjhula Venkata Sivaramakrishna Sastry, connoisseur of Telugu literature. The award, along with a memento, a shawl and a citation, was presented to Seshasai by A. Sambasiva

Sastry, the younger brother of Durga Prasad.

Born in Gunaparru, near Tadepalligudem in West Godavari district, Bapiraju and Suramma who themselves were noted poets and astrologers, Seshasai (B.A. in Telugu from AU and M.A. in Sanskrit from BHU) worked as a lecturer in Sanskrit in almost all colleges in the State and retired as principal of the prestigious M.R. Government Sanskrit College, Vizianagaram, the celebration of the centenary of which during his tenure evoked overwhelming response from all over.

Author of several critiques, satakams and musical features like Jayadeva Saraswathi for AIR, he is now busy scripting a kaavyam on the Ramayana. His melodious rendering of some of the poems describing the Ahalya episode with intensity from it was the highlight of the kavi sammelanam.

The reputed exponent of Carnatic music, Neyveli Santanagopalan of Chennai, consecutively rendered vocal recitals in the premises of Sri Krishna Vidya Mandir of Bharatiya Vidya Kendram, GITAM College of Management Studies and SOS Ashram (Bhimili) last week. The Visakha Chapter of SPIC-MACAY, which has been in limelight for quite some time, thanks to the stewardship of S. Vijaya Kumar of Vijay Nirman Company, who is the president of Builders Association of India, organised these concerts. They were commendably coordinated by Venkateswarlu, professor in chemical engineering in AU, who is SPIC-MACAY's local convener.

Ably accompanied on the violin by M.A. Sundareswaran and on the mridangam by K.R. Ganesh, also from Chennai, the concerts reflected an impression of being excellent ensemble music. The audience, mostly the young pupils, especially of the B.V.K. Vidya Mandir were remarkably attentive. In chorus, they even repeated the chanting of Rama Rama Hare Hare, Rama Krishna Hare Hare in perfect alignment of sruthi, laya and raaga in which the musician rendered first.

Evocatively tuneful elaboration of `Palukavemi Daiwama' (Poornachandrika) and `Enduku Peddala' (Sankarabharanam) of Tyagaraja were the highlights. The tani on the mridangam and the response on the violin, the raaga essays in particular, evoked loud

applause from the youngsters.

A. RAMALINGA SASTRY.
