Green Mercy, an animal rights organisation, observed the `Animal rights fortnight' from January 14 to 30. Awareness campaigns to educate the people on various issues like `Existing animal protection laws', `Animal rights', `Humane awareness education' and `environmental awareness' were conducted during the fortnight.

An exhibition on wheels, video shows, street plays, brochures and awareness rallies were organised during the programme. The organisation volunteers attended to the animals neglected on the streets and fed them and free veterinary camps were also conducted to treat sick animals.
A special programme for students and youth on "Welfare of daily life wildlife" was organised at the Indira Zoological Park (zoo) on January 26. The programme was jointly organised by the Zoo Outreach Organisation, Coimbatore, Chester Zoo, Britain, Bat Conservation International, USA and the British Primatological Society, London in association with Green Mercy. Kit bags were distributed to all the participants free of cost.
