ASHOK NAGAR: Counselling point

The turning point is a non-governmental organisation under Hope Foundation that provides counselling services from childhood to old age.

The emergence of nuclear households has brought in its due course a series of changes in economical, political, social and cultural life style, which has a drastic impact on the family.

The households comprising young parents lack support and guidance of elders in matters of child rearing practices and parenting. And with more and more women taking jobs outside the home, the traditional role of the wife has changed and there is little time available at hand for the kids.

This is where `Turning Point,' a non-governmental organisation registered under the `Hope Foundation' comes into picture. The institution provides counselling and need based intervention for children, teachers and parents. The counselling will be held at specially and professionally designed places, where privacy and confidentiality are maintained.

Says V Rajesh Menon, Director, "The counsellor's role is essentially that of a `facilitator' in helping to bring out the best in a child and the teacher in the interest of the child's development and the educational system at large."

The other area of counselling is related to the aspects such as phobia (fear), complexes and psychosomatic illness (giving excuses like stomach-ache inorder to escape from a situation).

Besides, the target group for counselling services also include the adolescents, bachelors, couples and senior citizens. Hence effectively dealing with an individuals short-term and long-term problems starting from childhood to old age.

The centre is opened to the public from 9.30 am to 5 pm on all days except Sundays and national holidays. There will also be free counselling sessions for the economically deprived on every Wednesday.

The centre is situated at about 800 meters from Ashok Pillar, opposite to Chennai District Circle Library, near Udhayam theatre. For further details contact Turning Point, B-184, 11th Avenue, Ashok Nagar. Phone 3700480 / 4890272.
