Festival of music and dance

Veteran Nedunuri Krishna Murthy will be conferred the Sangeetha Vidya Nidhi title at the third annual festival of the Andhra Music Academy.

THE ANDHRA Music Academy (AMA) is currently celebrating its third annual music festival till February 9 at the Rajaji auditorium of Bharateeya Vidyabhavan. Sivaganga Sangeetha Parishat sponsors AMA, with a major objective of preserving and propagating the rich Indian classical music and tradition. Every year an eminent musician is chosen and is conferred the title of Sangeetha Vidya Nidhi.

This year veteran Nedunuri Krishna Murthy is chosen for the honour, which includes a citation, a gold medal and cash award of Rs. 32,032. Nedunuri is already the recipient of Sangeetha Kala Nidhi title of Madras Music Academy and Sangeetha Choodamani of Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai.

The festival begins at around 9 a.m and has two sessions - one in the morning and another in the evening (from 6 p.m.) and is open to all. A conference titled `Federation of AP Sangeetha Sabhas' will be held on February 8, bringing all the organisers of music sabhas on to a single platform.

The objective basically is to bring out a programme to promote music and encourage young talent. Besides, the academy is also bringing out great works of artists of yesteryear, like Srirangam Gopala Ratnam, Sobhana Rangachari, Voleti Venkateswarlu, Susarla Sivaram (descendent of Susarla Dakshinamurhy, second generation disciple of Thyagaraja) so that they are preserved for posterity.

The man who conceived the whole project, Sadguru Sri Sivanandamurthy will inaugurate the festival. The festival is featuring in its morning sessions, some of the talented artists like, veena artist Jaya Sekhar of Chennai (disciple of Dr.Pinakapani and Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana), hindustani vocalist Lalitha Kurulkar (who is used to provide second voice to Parveen Sultana in her concerts in the city), vocalists Kaivalya Kumar of Vijayawada, Mandapaka Sarada of Vizag and Varanasi Sri Soumya.

The evening sessions will see young and leading vainika D. Srinivas, vocalist M.S. Sheela of Bangalore, Dr. Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana - a great scholar, teacher and musician of rare qualities, flautist Dr. N. Ramani of Chennai, vocalist duo Hyderabad Brothers and Sitar player Mujtab Ali Khan. Kuchipudi dance recital by Pasumarthi Ramalinga Sastry and party is the concluding feature of the festival.

The last day is allotted to holding the main function when Nedunuri will be felicitated and presented with the title. There will be lecture demonstrations by Nedunuri Krishnamurthy and Dr. Pappu Venugopala Rao, director of the American Institute of Indian Studies, Chennai.
