MYLAPORE: Perilous paths
STEP HIGH and wide while you're walking along Kutcheri Road in Luz, Mylapore for chances are you'll sprain an ankle if you don't, or worse get run over by a motorist. The narrow pavements on this road have been taken over by cycle and two-wheeler repair shops and general stores selling everything from puja items to kitchen sinks.
Kutcheri Road is a busy commercial area and traffic is heavy through-out the day, putting pedestrians at risk. They have to walk along the road, despite the chaotic traffic because of the encroachments on either side.
Pedestrians, stores, vendors and wares jostle for space on these limited footpaths. Shops that no longer have space to stock their goods inside the store spill onto the footpath, making walking a dangerous activity.
When there are no vendors or shops occupying the pedestrian space, two-wheelers are parked and the authorities don't seem to fine them, say regular road-users.
The problem is at its worst during peak hours between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., when pedestrians have to hop, skip and jump their way to safety.
