IF YOU are looking to buy designer jewellery but with a traditional touch or vice versa, then Shree, Temple of Gold, could be one of your destinations.
The three-storeyed 8,000 sq.ft. showroom, which threw open its doors to Chennai's jewellery lovers in September 2002, offers a glittering array of beautiful creations in gold, silver and diamonds, besides other precious and semi-precious stones.
Walk into the snazzy showroom in T.Nagar, and you are transported into another world. While the first floor is devoted to gold jewellery, the second floor has on display colourful precious and semi-precious stones, in the form of necklaces and earrings. The basement houses exquisite and delicate diamond studded neckpieces, rings and earrings. Besides these, one can also pick up the Nakshatra collection, Collection G and Asmi collection.
There is an amazing range to choose from, be it for a wedding or daily wear. A magnificent five-tier choker from Kolkata vies for attention with delicate chain, pendant and matching earrings.
A kundan set studded with uncut diamonds and green beads is just right for a blushing bride as is a white gold set, aflame with tiny diamonds.
Then there are those lovely bangles — some have pretty enamel work while others are embellished with fine filigree — that spell magic. For variety, there are square shaped bangles with a dull finish.
As for earrings and rings, there is something to suit different tastes, be it chunky ones with enamel work or tiny danglers with a single stone to add lustre. If you are looking for an unusual oddiyanam, then check out the Hyderabadi masterpiece studded with polki and minakari work. As for the prices, they are pocket-friendly.
The range of silverware includes anklets, vessels, trays and lamps. And for those who love extravagance, there are spectacle frames... in pure gold!
Incidentally, Shree is a fully BIS hallmarked jewellery store. Explains Ashok Kumar Jain, managing director, Shree, "Hallmarking guarantees the quality and purity of gold. The main objective is to protect the customer from adulteration and help manufacturers maintain specified standards."
He adds, "A hallmarked piece of jewellery carries the BIS logo, the fineness number, mark of the hallmarking centre, the year of marking and the jeweller's mark. Of course, items studded with stones are not hallmarked lest they damage the piece. Normally, pieces weighing more than eight grams are hallmarked."
