STUMPED
Virgin Music, Rs.50
THE SONGS of this cassette - which convey best wishes to the Indian eleven to win the World Cup - if heard by Indian skipper, Saurav Ganguly and his boys would certainly pump adrenalin into their veins. The motivational songs remind the players that they must remember their motherland before the duel. Side A starts with "Humko Toh Hai Poora Yakien", which begins with Shubha Mudgal's voice and then other singers chip in. Shweta Shetty repeats the same lyrics but brings youthfulness in her voice. "Stumped" seems more of a filmy song but the lyrics are lacklustre. "Aise Hi Bada Hua Gavaskar" -- Rahul Dravid's name comes before Sachin Tendulkar's - is a peppy number. A bit of bhangra beat has been thrown in for good measure.
Side B begins with "Sona Chandi", which says that the World Cup is ours. Then there is "Ek Sapna" and "Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawano Ka", which is a patriotic song.
OM NAMAH
SaRama, Rs.40
THIS ALBUM sung by Sadhana Sargam, Suresh Wadkar and chorus is a series of devotional renderings in Hindi prose and verse. The initial shlokas sung by the two lead singers are followed by a commentary in the `katha' style prevalent in households of the Hindi belt. Thereafter, songs and commentary alternate. While the music is neither traditional, nor ingeniously different or heart-warmingly melodious as light music goes, it has the benefit of allowing the voices to be clearly heard, and as such serves its devotional purpose. Lyrics are by Raajesh Johri and Mrudula Shah, and the music director is Dharmanshu Raval.
OM NAMA SHIVAY
Rhim Jhim, Rs.35
AS THE name of this cassette suggests all songs are devotional. These songs can be best heard in the morning when one prays to the Almighty. The Sanskrit shlokas might go over your heard but the melody leaves a lasting imprint on your mind. Side A has "Ganesh Vandana" and "Om Nama Shivay". Besides the melodious voices of the vocalists, percussionists have done a wonderful job. The sitar player has lived up the mark considering this is a spiritual number and not meant to be heard for entertainment. Side B has "Samba Sadashiv Samba Sadashiv Jai Shankar".
FAGUN MEIN BHOUJI
BAWAL KEHLEWA
T-Series, Rs. 35
WITH A play of dholak, shehnai and fast music, all the eight numbers of this Holi special album give out that festive mood the annual colourful festival brings. Sung by Poornima, Manoj Tiwari `Mridul,' Deepali and Sonali, the songs, with lyrics in Bhojpuri provided by Manoj and Deep, can be a fitting addition to a `gali Holi.'
Some of the songs have dialogues imitating Big B Amitabh in some of his famous flicks before the music starts.
UP, BIHAR KE HOLI
T-Series, Rs.35
PROBABLY BRINGING a cassette out of a collection of old and new Hindi films songs of Holi would have been a better idea. Catering to specifically Indian rural areas, this cassette containing eight songs, four on each side, celebrates the festival of colours through teasing the opposite gender, glorifying colours and the congregation of people on the occasion. Voices cry for rehearsals. A feast for people on the street on the festival.
