For some physicians, service and dedication take priority over everything else.

RECENTLY, A private nursing home in the city admitted a patient in his nineties for suspected dehydration, providing a bed and treating him with electral tablets and other medicine. The patient recovered soon; the duty doctor concluded that the administration of intravenous fluids was not necessary. The elder was discharged, much to the relief of his anxious family members. The hospital bill came to an unbelievable Rs. 30, the doctor and nurses declining to accept anything more.
Years ago, another elderly patient was suffering from a sore foot that showed no signs of healing. The old man was thoroughly examined by a diabetologist, who suspected gangrene-affliction and advised that the foot be surgically removed.The patient, before checking into the hospital, visited his friends and well-wishers, announcing, ironically, that he would no longer be mobile to call on them in future.
At the hospital, the doctor counselled the man on "life after operation".
However, minutes before the operation, the surgeon did a final check on the patient's foot and declared to the astounded family that there was nothing wrong with the leg and that he could get back home immediately.
The doctor, after prescribing antibiotics for the foot to heal, advised the patient on his diet, and insisted that he take long walks every day. The patient went on to live for many more years.
Had the amputation been performed, the surgeon would have made a small fortune, the patient would have returned home without one leg, and no one would have been any wiser.
The doctors in question are Mohammed Gilani and Sriram. Doctors such as these perform thankless tasks and live almost a thankless life. They answer our distress calls any time of day or night and give us a new lease of life, making life enjoyable. It's time we take time to say something that's almost never expressed... "Gracias".
