THE HYDERABADI biryani is a favourite with the pedigree dogs of the city. These well-bred dogs are fed `special' chicken/mutton/beef biryani which is home delivered.
Well, M.V.A. Bhatt of `Well-fed' is the person behind the venture.
"More and more people are turning to me because the biryani supplied is healthy and nutritious for dogs and convenient for the owners," Bhatt continues.
Naturally. All one has to do is dial 55633413 and a courteous voice from the other side says: "Good morning, how may I help your dog?"
After some initial enquiries about the breed and age of your dog, the food is delivered at your doorstep.
And the animal does not make a fuss about food because it is much better than the `boring' home-cooked leftovers or the `monotonous' curd rice.
The `Well-fed' range of products includes, `Puppy special', `Regular', `Veg', `Chicken' and `Beef'. "The food is cooked just like biryani, but all the ingredients are minced," says Bhatt.
The ingredients used are rice, maize, jowar, ragi, vegetables and chicken or beef, depending on the dog's preference.
For the `Puppy special', eggs, milk and multi-vitamins are added to the normal ingredients.
"We change the diet according to each season. Like, for summer, we reduce the quantity of meat and supplement it with curd so that the body temperature of the animal is maintained," the owner says. The food is prepared in consultation with noted vets and is rich in all the essentials a dog's diet should have.
While a kilogram of beef biryani is priced at Rs. 11, chicken comes for Rs. 20 and veg. Biryani costs Rs. 15.
`Well-fed' also offers suggestions on the amount of food one should order for the dog, depending on its age and breed.
"Because the food supplements the dog's body with all necessary minerals and nutrients, only one meal of a `Well-fed' lunch, is sufficient," says Bhatt, who has been running the shop (near Chacha Nehru Park, Masab Tank) for the last 20 years after his father - a vet - Dr. Nuruddin handed it to him as a family legacy.
`Well-fed' is a part of `Dr. Nuruddin's Doggie and Pets Shoppie' that was established in the same area in 1970.
"Apart from dog-food, we also have a dog hostel (where one can keep one's pet should the family have to go out of station), a treatment-cum-hospital centre and a trainer's section (to train dogs). Actually it is a one-stop shop for all the needs of your dog," asserts the owner.
