IT WAS one of those concerts that stood out for its choice of ragas, keertanas and the manner of rendering them. Cherthala Ranganatha Sharma regaled the audience at the Kalikota Hall, Tripunithura, under the auspices of the Sree Poornathrayeesa Sangeeta Sabha with his erudition and style of presentation.
The mark of erudition and in depth knowledge of `krithis,' his unique style of `ragalapana' was evident right from the beginning of the concert.'Neelaayadakshi... ' in Mayamalavagowla, `Jalajanabha... ' in Kedaragowla, `Ninnate..' in Kanada and `Kadambari... ' in Mohanam brought out the versatility of the vocalist.
For the ragam-thanam-pallavi in Panthuvarali, Ranganatha Sharma chose the rare `misrajathi thirpuda' tala. After the niraval, he sang the pallavi in four time frames. And amidst this he used the rare `chathurasrathisram,' which is really complex. This was followed by the ragamalika swaram in Sahana, Bihag and Sindhubhairavi.
His selection of Khamas raga for the virutham and Hamsanandi was memorable. The Papanasam Sivan krithi `Sreenivasa... ' followed and Sharma rounded off the concert with a thillana in Maandu raga.
Changanassery B. Harikumar on the mridangam and P.L.Sudhir on the ghatom excelled in the thaniyavarthanam, while T.H.Subramaniam on the violin provided an excellent accompaniment to the vocalist.
