THE SWEET smell of grass and mud, the rustle of palm leaf and paper... it's Nature at its best. And that is the theme of Thofah's `Summer Mela'.
Offering cool sustainable solutions to beat the searing heat is a variety of products ranging from superfine Pattamadai pattu pais, korai grass cushions and table mats and multi coloured cotton dhurries to banana fabric bags, palmyra boxes, bins and baskets, terracotta urlis, tulsimadams and sweet boxes, handmade paper items and a host of traditional indoor games such as pallanguzhi, gilli danda, goli bambaram etc., all made by Kreeda.
The Pattamadai reed grass mats attract with their designer stripes and weaving combining traditional and contemporary patterns. The Pattamadai range also includes finely woven korai grass table mats, coasters, handbags, exercise and puja mats as well as innovative fans.
Beautifully finished, the colours of the mats range from deep reds, blues and blacks against the melting white texture.
A whole world of colour and superior craftsmanship are evident in every Palmyra leaf product made by the Pulicat Women's Cooperative Society. Palm leaf boxes in assorted sizes, laundry and waste paper bins, boxes for CDs and bottle case, bowls, rattles and table mats have all been exquisitely crafted in vibrant colours. Equally attractive are handmade paper designer stationery such as files, folders, pads, photo albums etc., artistically finished and embellished with graphics and dried flowers.
Other handcrafted items for the house include terracotta masks, terracotta moorhas and cotton dhurries from Warangal.
`Summer Mela' is on at Thofah, 11, Tapovan, Arunachalapuram, 2nd Street, Adyar, and V24, 13th street, Anna Nagar West till May 15.
