If you wish to make a career in hairdressing, M and J Academy in collaboration with L'Oreal Professionnel offers courses in hair dressing and styling, cutting and colouring.

IF YOU'VE ever been the victim of a traumatic session in the hairdresser's chair after which you looked like someone took a pair of garden shears to your mane, you'll welcome this bit of news.

The M and J Hair Academy in collaboration with L'Oreal Professionnel, which opened in the city last week, offers courses in hair dressing, hair styling, colouring and cutting. The academy is run by Mita Banker and Jennifer Thomas. It's the first of its kind in India and offers training that will help students to master various, creative hair styling techniques, claims Mita Banker from the academy, who has years of experience as a instructor for various salons across the country. The idea is to provide international quality training so that students can find employment anywhere in the world. "The certificates we give are recognised all over the world," says Banker. The L'Oreal course is five months long, inclusive of a one-month internship and provides apprenticeships and placements for deserving students. They also offer courses from City and Guilds of U.K. at the beginners and advanced levels. And there are M and J's own two-month basic and advanced courses in cutting and styling. The academy aims to turn out professional hairdressers with "well-rounded knowledge for the improvement of the hair dressing industry."

Good hairstylists are hard to come by in India and very often customers find that their favourite hairdresser has been poached by another salon. Vismay Sharma of L'Oreal India says that the salon industry in India needs more trained professionals so that salons in India will be on par with those abroad.

The academy has five core faculty members and guest faculty. The course will cover hair and skin care including aromatherapy and herbal make-up. Hair styling will deal in depth with cutting, colouring, perming, relaxing and creative styling. There will also be regular workshops and seminars on make-up, creative cuts and colouring that will be beneficial for both novices as well as professionals already in the field.

The M and J Academy is at Salzberg Square, 1, First Floor, 107 Harrington Road, Chetpet.
