AS A citizen of Madurai, I should not disparage the achievements of the Corporation.

But there is more to be done than what has been achieved. In my view, I am not completely satisfied with the services of the Corporation.

Besides the bad roads in the city, the platforms around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple serve as urinals.

Moreover, the platforms are also encroached by hawkers.

The sanitation is in a worse condition and the garbage disposal system is no different. On the other side, one of the appreciable things is the strict measures taken to prevent the `poster culture'. But, still there are many areas that the Corporation has to concentrate to improve the city.

NO CORPORATION, for that matter any local body, can render service to the full satisfaction of its citizens on the expected lines, since perceptions and practices vary. The main source of income for Madurai Corporation is restricted to collection of taxes, which would be hardly sufficient to meet the expenses to provide basic amenities.

Maintenance of clean and hygienic conditions naturally involves heavy expenditure, surpassing the present resources, resulting in a deficit budget every year.

Apart from curtailing non-plan expenditure to the minimum, all the loopholes should be plugged at a faster pace before much damage is done, worsening the present financial crunch.

IT IS very pleasant to see that the Corporation extending the underground drainage facility to the unserved areas. As we say, well begun is half done, it is impressive to note that the civic body is determined to extend the facility to all the areas within the Corporation limits. Thanks to the rainwater harvesting system being implemented in the city, the ground water table will soon get replenished. The laying of roads along the Vaigai banks deserves accolades.

I am afraid despite all these positive measures the actions to be taken lay in a heap right in front of the civic body. The encroachments, which are narrowing down the roads and creating congestion in traffic, have to be removed. Two other problems to be taken care of in this regard are the sand and the garbage piling up on the roadsides.

A. Shyam Narayan,

Madurai - 6.

THE SERVICES provided by the Corporation of Madurai are generally good and satisfactory. The main requirements of the people are drinking water, useable roads, health and education. Though drinking water is supplied, presently, on alternative days, no difficulty is felt by the people. If the monsoon works out well, daily supply of water will be restored.

Regarding the roads, the Corporation is taking efforts to maintain them to the extent possible. But yet attention is to be given to the peripheral areas of the city where the conditions are bad. Warranty should be obtained from road contractors for quality, standard and longer life of the roads laid.

Clearing of garbage should be undertaken during nights. Also the urinals provided on the roads should be maintained.

Madurai - 1.
