LOVE OVER EDUCATION: Raju (Raja) and Usha (Gazala)
Vijayam (TELUGU)
Cast: Raja, Gazala, Giribabu, Muralimohan
Music: Koti
Direction: Singeetham Srinivasa Rao
THE UNDERLYING principle in making this film is to tell the world that even a poor tribal boy can scale academic heights to bag a gold medal. And this is what the protagonist Raju (Raja) proves in the end. But the path to achieve this is filled with funny happenings involving his friends and his classmate Usha (Gazala).
Director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao begins the film with a real life ghastly actthat occurred in Tamil Nadu, reflecting tribal superstitions reported in newspapers. A tribal couple dig a pit and bury their ailing infant and then retrieve it after a few minutes with the superstitious belief that the child gets rid of all his ailments. But they find it dead. The couple was arrested.
For Srinivasa Rao this act looked a potential and dramatic opening in which a forest officer (Muralimohan) comes to the child's rescue in this re-enacted drama on screen.
Then the film moves forward 22 years straight into a college campus. That child is the hero of the film. The hero is surrounded by mandatory friends, who do more damage to Raju than help in their eagerness to build a strong love bond between Raju and Usha. Usha forgives mistakes, but does not tolerate bluffing. The friends lie that Raju is the son of a millionaire industrialist staying abroad.
Raju tries his best to set the record straight, but in vain. He even writes a letter revealing the facts. His friends hand the letter to Usha in a chocolate box. Usha gives importance to the chocolates and drops the letter unknowingly. Usha starts admiring Raju.
There is another boy in the college named Anjan, a book worm, who never takes his eyes off his text books and scores as many marks as Raju does. The two vie for the gold medal.
For sometime the drama shifts to Goa, as Usha and Raju go there, along with her father for a holiday. Comedians, like Dharmavarapu (hotel manager) and Sunil (as Siddu), a relative of Usha aspiring to marry heradd some slapstick comedy.
On return Usha faces a hurdle in her brother (Rajeev Kanakala), who is bent on separating the lovers as his sister has to marry the son of a business magnate.
Knowing Raju's true moorings he takes his sister to the forest to reveal Raju's identity. Usha feels cheated and does not give a chance to Raju to explain. Raju loses interest in studies.
The forest officer financing Raju's education is so upset that he slaps him for giving importance to love over studies.
He requests Usha just to pretend love till the exams are over. She obliges and Raju is declared as the winner of the gold medal. When Ramanaidu, the education minister, comes to the dais to present the honour Raju refuses it saying it belonged to Anjan. The suspense is maintained for a while.
Raja is at ease in most of the scenes. Gazala is quite cute. Muralimohan and Giribabu make their presence felt. The film is musically competent with well-scored numbers like Kusalama O Priya and Yenduko Premalo composed by Koti.
