Espousing a cause

A documentary on anti-smoking, featuring Shashi Kapoor, Urmila Matondkar and Vivek Oberoi will be shortly aired on television.

ONE PUFF CLOSER TO DEATH: The documentary aims to educate people on the evils of tobacco.

IT IS heartening to see anti-smoking areas declared and efforts being made to curb smoking, educate people on the hazards of smoking in various ways.

A documentary on anti-smoking made by Shaad Ali (the son of film-maker and designer Muzaffar Ali), the director of the Hindi film Saathiya will be telecast on television and at theatres from May 31.

"The offer to make the documentary came from the Cancer Patients Aid Association," says Shaad Ali, who teamed up with Prasoon Joshi for the script.

This two-and-a-half minute documentary features Shashi Kapoor, Urmila Matondkar and Vivek Oberoi and is produced by Shaad Ali's production house `Highlight'.

Shot by Mahesh Mathai, this documentary "does not preach but is more on the lines of a confession. It was shot in St. Mary's School, Mumbai. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have composed the background score. All the actors worked free of cost. Kodak also gave us the stock free of cost," says Shaad.

Shashi Kapoor is the surprise element. "He is not seen these days. Once a smoker, he gave up smoking, therefore we decided to rope him in. Urmila is a performer, more than a mere sex symbol. She represents health and fitness. That determined her choice," states Shaad. Vivek is known to espouse such causes.

Making the documentary was a big experience for Shaad, and he is hoping the message will reach out and the documentary will have the desired impact.
