The Smart Class Program combines technology with traditional teaching methods to make learning more interesting.

A CLASSROOM is a place where young minds are shaped to achieve greatness. When teaching gets boring, students start hating school. Few realise that with a little bit of imagination, classes can actually be turned lively. The Smart Class Program developed by Educomp Datamatics Limited (EDL) aims to make classroom learning a completely different experience.
When the programme was introduced at the GKD Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Periyanaickanpalayam, the little ones were most excited.
They did not even allow the teachers to speak. And, their enthusiasm only seemed natural, for the regular rhymes they recited with their teacher now reached their ears through multi-dimensional monitors installed in the classroom.
For a class on how birds chirp, the kids were shown animated pictures to help them understand better. The recall rate was better and they participated enthusiastically.
The Educomp Technology Enabled Classroom (ETEC), as it is called, brings in a multi-sensory learning environment to the classroom. A fusion of images, graphics, animation, video and even music bring the lessons alive.
Usually, when the teachers are not around, classrooms turn chaotic. Students convert it into some sort of a playroom. In such a scenario, how safe will the machines be?
"All equipment installed in the classrooms are tamper proof, in case some naughty students throw their books at these machines or try to do some mischief," says Roshni G Nair, Project Coordinator, EDL.
Before a class, a teacher walks into the ETEC and makes a request for the needed resources.
These are then uploaded from a digital library. A resource coordinator is permanently stationed at the knowledge centre.
So, what will the role of a teacher be in a technology-enabled classroom? "The role of teachers will not change in any way. The blackboard and textbook will still exist, only the trainers will be empowered with technology," says Abhinav Dhar, Vice President of EDL.
"The digital resources are developed at the curriculum research centre in Delhi. We take the syllabus and map it onto our resources. It's a mix of tradition and technology.
