Water woes

ENORMOUS GROWTH in population and the lack of scope for linear expansion have compelled people in urban areas to go in for high-rise apartments.

Coimbatore is no exception.

If 'security' is a `plus' factor that makes people go in for flats, non-supply of the justified quantum of potable water by the Corporation is the biggest `minus' point.

Every flat-owner pays a reasonably high amount as property tax, which is normally much higher than the tax paid by the owners of independent houses, which almost equal in area and in the same neighbourhood.

But, the quantum of water that each flat gets from the bulk supply is lesser than what an independent house gets.

The Corporation should take into consideration the duration of supply and the number of flats in a high-rise building to determine the diameter of the pipe to be connected to the `water-supply main' for ensuring justified supply to an apartment.

Since this is not done, the inmates suffer. And, adding insult to injury, the Corporation collects water tax at commercial rates for the bulk supply made to these high-rise buildings, overlooking the fact that the entire supply is for domestic use. Authorities should look into this and take corrective measures immediately.

Responses to last week's letter on Electricity Billing

IN HIS letter last week, Mr. V.V. Subramanian had said that consumers stood to lose out due to the bi-monthly billing system adopted by the Electricity Department.

That is not true.

Whether you are billed every month or once in two months, the charges are the same.

I, TOO, used to presume that consumers were being fleeced by the Electricity Department.

But, I stand corrected.

An EB official told me that they worked out the rate for monthly billing and, in the event of the bill being sent once in two months, they adjusted it correspondingly.

THE LETTER on electricity billing has been borne out of misconceived illusion.

I am given to understand that the EB billing pattern and the slab system of tariff are meant for bi-monthly billing only.

When the bill is given on a monthly basis, the rates are halved.

The same rule is applicable to telephone bills also. It would be nice if the Electricity Department came forward with clarifications on such issues since this is a doubt many consumers have.
