Half yearly report

THE FIRST half of 2003 has been a mixed bag for the Tamil film industry. There were 41 releases up to June 30, out of which, five films will make money — "Saamy", "Dhool", "Arasu" "Jayam" and "Parthipan Kanavu", while two may break even. The industry lost about Rs. 50 crores during the last six months on films, which bombed at the box office. Still with a 12 per cent success ratio, it is not a bad report card so far.

The biggest money-spinner till now is "Saamy". A notable feature so far is that movies that had a weak story bombed at the box-office, while films with some newness in content and presentation like "Parthipan Kanavu" did good business. Does this mean that the audience have started giving importance to the story and style and no longer flock to the theatre to see their favourite hero? Lack of funds and high salaries of stars have been the bane of the industry. After a single hit, most of the stars raise their salaries by 100 to 200 per cent, but are not willing to compromise once their film flops! Subsequently, the producer has to bear the brunt, as no distributor is willing to pay him the quoted amount, and finally ends up distributing the film himself. And after all this, when the film flops, the liabilities are on him!
