Campaigning for RWH
|
NSS student volunteers carried out a door-to-door campaign in various parts of the city urging people to instal RWH structures in buildings.

IT IS said that nothing ever gets done but for the eleventh hour. Though a dozen organisations on every street have been beating the cymbals for rainwater harvesting (RWH) for a few years now, most residents of Chennai seem to be getting into action only now. The Government agencies have also been reiterating from time to time that RWH structures are mandatory in all buildings. Now, with an ordinance the Government has tightened the screws. The deadline has been fixed - August 31. Residents of most localities seem to have woken up and smelled the coffee. However, the Government is also doing what it could to reach this urgency to them.
On July 27, Metrowater got NSS student volunteers to be "banner-carrying" supporters of RWH. About 6000 students fanned out into various areas of the city, in groups. Metrowater has 155 depots. Each depot was assigned 40 to 50 students. They went to these depots on Sunday morning, armed themselves with banners and pamphlets, and headed for their respective localities to urge the residents to install RWH structures before the deadline overtook them.
These students went to the houses in the localities covered by that particular depot, and handed over pamphlets that delineated the how and why of rainwater harvesting.
Area 5, which covers, among others, Anna Nagar, Purasawalkam and Mogappair East, was thick with action. In Anna Nagar, one witnessed students taking out what seemed like a procession. Carrying banners and mouthing slogans (here is a sampler "Raindrop in the sky is a lifedrop on earth"), they left the residents gawking at them in puzzlement which was soon resolved as the students went from door-to-door to apprise the residents about the RWH resources that are available.
The Local Bodies Minister M.C. Sampath also participated in the door-to-door campaign at Anna Nagar.
