`Bruce Almighty,' which opens tomorrow, has funny man Jim Carrey playing God.

WALKING ON WATER: God (Morgan Freeman) tells Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) a thing or two.
AFTER PLAYING critically acclaimed roles in movies like The Trueman Show and The Man on the Moon, Jim Carrey reunites with his Pet Ventura and Liar, Liar director/producer Tom Shadyac for an inspired comedy about a man who goes in search of god and ends up finding himself.
The film also stars Jennifer Aniston as Carrey's girlfriend Grace and Morgan Freeman as God.
When the Bruce Almighty cameras began to roll on a hot day in early August on a huge exterior set on the universal back lot, which had been converted into a huge chunk of Buffalo, New York, so did the laughter. It is not hard to chuckle at the sight of Jim Carrey as Bruce Nolan reporting on the baking of a chocolate chip cookie that's the size of a small house!
Equalling the cinematic magic was the on-screen chemistry that was evolving between Jim Carrey and the rest of the cast. The combination of Carrey's comedic genius and the Morgan Freeman's vast experience and gravity created an off screen relationship which echoed the film itself.
"Morgan has this lifetime of human experience with a smile over it all, and that's what he bought to the set," notes Shadyac. "Jim would sometimes ask Morgan about getting to a certain moment in the scene and Morgan would tell him about his process and experience. And interestingly Morgan would come to Jim for the comedic insight. It was really amazing to watch these two experts at their crafts come together and bounce off each other."
Talking about Carrey's improvisational talent, Shadyac comments about the scene between where Carrey and his rival newscaster Evan played by Steve Carell, "That scene was scripted in one line, `Bruce messes with Evan.' Two comedic minds just got together to get a good scene."
With all the hard work over the course of four months of filming, some days on Bruce Almighty set were like fiestas. There was the morning following the presentation of the Emmy Awards, in which Carrey and Tom Shadyac led the entire crew into congratulatory applause and hugs for tearfully happy Jennifer Aniston, who had won the honour for her work on Friends.
Carrey also once stood in for Buster - a one-year-old mutt rescued from the pound who portrays Bruce and Grace's pup Sam - by delivering off-screen barks.
Talking about the movie, Carrey says, "I love comedy. I think it's important never to look a gift horse in the mouth and never to overlook your talents, what you are good at. It doesn't matter if the film is dramatic or comedic. I just like being creative."
So get ready for another round of crazy laughs as the original funny man shows god a trick or two.
