AN AVID interest in textile designing brought Sheela Balaji of TVS Group into the Indian fashion scene. Having set up a small unit at Chennai in 1982, the proprietor of `Soundarya', her brand, she held her first exhibition in Chennai in the same year. Her hard work and inherent experimenting nature established her in the craft of textile designing, and earned her a chance to work for the Pudupavu Project, showcasing various textiles from Tamil Nadu at New Delhi.
Blending natural and synthetic dyes resulting in a wider range of brighter colours on subdued backgrounds, is the designer's forte. Her experimentation proved to be successful particularly in the home accessories segment. Currently printing designs for world-renowned designer Zandra Rhodes for her Indian collection, Sheela is a name to reckon with.
Soundarya Prints, a vegetable dye workshop with over 2,000 wood and metal blocks, represents a cross-section of traditional designs and geometric patterns. Designs are rarely repeated in a range of bedspreads, tablemats, cushion covers and towels in both cotton and silk.
Ghanshyam Sarode, on the other hand, is a designer specialised in weaving fine motifs on saris - those timeless wonders with contemporary elegance. Using varied and intricate skills, weaves, colours and textiles to produce a brilliant effect on fusion wear. He also designs on traditional saris like Uppada, Gadwal, Ikkat and Kalamkaris focussing on luxury, finish, texture and colours all of which give a feel of opulence and timelessness.
Check out the exclusive works of both the designers, which will be on display at `also' boutique, White House building, Begumpet, Tel: 23412047, from August 1 to 4.
