Managing thought

Learn how the power of thought can help change your life

SUNDAR, A businessman, was going through a low patch in his personal life. The business bug had bitten him and he was rarely at home.

The result: An angry wife and a kid who did not jump with joy when he returned from office.

The things he repents most now? Not being able to see his kid grow up and not spending time to build a relationship with his wife.

When things reached a head, he got in touch with someone who promised to help him bring his life back on track.

Months later, the change in him is visible. His wife smiles at him and he is no longer a stranger to his kid. What's more, Sundar's business is flourishing.

Confidence counts

His problem was that he was spending too much time on smaller accounts when he had a steady source of business from bigger clients.

"All I had to do was cut short the time spent with smaller clients who hung around for hours. They took the hint and left. A confident me was able to win over many more bigger clients," says Sundar.

After all, who does not like a confident person?

"That is the power of thought," says motivator and thought power consultant Sanjiv K. Padman of Thought Ignite Foundation, which trains people in developing positive thoughts and confidence.

He recently brought out `Affirmations', a CD that helps infuse such thoughts in people. "Affirmations condition the mind and help change underlying negative beliefs. Thoughts have the power to create," he says.

Sanjiv, who trained under well-known motivator Jim Brown in the U.S., says that when people develop confidence, they work better. As for motivation, he says anyone can be motivated, but if you motivate an idiot, you can only get a motivated idiot. "Success comes from how you handle your mind," he states.

Use your weapons

Different people have different facets. "So, you must know how to use your weapons. Only then can you succeed," he says. And learning has no age. "The mind's capacity to absorb is high. If you can master so much when you are five, you can definitely do it when older. And, when you can absorb so much, why not only the good?" he asks.

Many people slog for years but get nowhere.

Their problem, Sanjiv says, is not attracting the right kind of people. "You attract who you are. If you come across as weak, those are the kind of people who will flock around you."

Breaking deep-rooted old values that stifle a person also helps improve the quality of life.

That is what happened to a 50-year-old married lady who suddenly realised that she was not leading the kind of life she wanted to. Now she writes poetry, tries her hand at pottery and goes off on trips on her own.

"And her relationship with her husband has improved," says Sanjiv.

His only advice before listening to `Affirmations' — Take an hour's break to listen to it. Relax and imagine each sentence is real.
