Harrods signs Peacock label



EXCLUSIVE: Mumbai socialite Nawaz Modi Singhania in a Peacock creation

Shattering the popular myth that Lakme India Fashion Week provides major opportunities to Delhi-based designers only, Mumbai-based designer duo Falguni and Shane Peacock have won contract with Harrods. Apart from Tarun Tahiliani, they are the only one to have been chosen by the London's famous designer store.

Known for their corsets, ponchos, slip dresses, embroidered shirts and trousers and jackets, Falguni says intermediaries can't prevent the buyers from visiting particular stalls. "If your work is good nobody can stop the buyer from coming to you. Our show was on the penultimate day still we received good response all through the Week. The only advantage Delhi designers have is they can take buyers to their stores and show them more variety."

"We get to meet most of the domestic buyers and from the Gulf in Mumbai itself. The demands of the West Asian market are similar to local market. The Week provides us the opportunity to reach out to the European market," she adds.

But how come the same collection works for two different markets? "Actually most people from the Gulf visit Europe for holidays and stores like Harrods cater to their needs. Even before the Week, the U.A.E. major Vila Moda signed a deal with us. Their requirement is also on similar lines."

Falguni is against corporate tie-ups where they have to limit themselves to creative inputs for mass production. "We don't want to dilute the Peacock label. We are into luxury prêt or high-end-pret. We want to make few numbers because we believe fashion garments are all about exclusivity. Even in ready-to-wear we want to offer something which is found only in one wardrobe."
