A phenomenon of sustained journalism for 60 years, not only in reporting all cultural events in print and electronic media (Akashvani) but also bringing out books both in Telugu and English comprising thumbnail sketches of men and essays on matters, Guruzada Suryanarayana Murthy, popularly called GSN Murthy, stands hailed a personification of the process of ever progressive perseverance.
Murthy was associated with a national English daily, THE HINDU, and the 'Andhra Patrika' (Telugu) as a cultural correspondent for about 25 years at Vizianagaram. He also served Akashvani as well as its reporter from Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam for about a decade. Not only that he owned the Vani Press, edited and published the Telugu weekly, 'Vijayi' for over two decades, besides being a news agent at Vizianagaram for THE HINDU, 'Times of India' and 'Andhra Patrika' groups of publications.
No wonder Murthy was the most opted secretary for the Rachayitala Sangham and Press Correspondents Association of Vizianagaram on one hand and Sri Gita Nritya Kalamandali of the most popular natyacharya, the late D.Y. Sampath Kumar (Andhra jaalari fame).
Thanks to Murthy's innovative stewardship, the dance-drama, `Abhignanasakuntalam', presented at the national festival of Kaalidasa Samaroh in 1961 at Ujjain, won the first prize and along with Sampath Kumar, Murthy received the Kanaka Kalasam from the hands of then M.P. Governor, Paluskar. The AP Government, which selected and deputed the team , later organised a show of the same ballet in Ravindra Bharathi at Hyderabad in the presence of the then President, S. Radhakrishnan, and the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who honoured Murthy and Sampath Kumar on the occasion.
Murthy also had the proud privilege of being a member of the press team which was sent on an extensive study tour of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, first by Shipping Corporation of India and then again by the Eastern Naval Command.
He was felicitated by a number of prestigious social and cultural bodies, including the Vizag Journalists Forum, and the Madras Telugu Academy.
The highly honoured occasion of the Sashtipoorthi of the career of GSN Murthy as a pressman was celebrated on a grand scale in Hotel Daspalla by a committee of hosts, including the founder- president of Vintage Visakha, A.R. Subrahmanyam, C.S. Rao, Muddamsetti Hanumantha Rao, the VJF president, S.S. Shiva Shankar, and Sahadeva Rao.
Book release
`Bhaava Tarangaalu', a book comprising thought provoking collection of Murthy's museful impressions on a variety of problems of the present day society and the ongoing processes in it penned down now and then, was released at the function.
The noted writers, Mangu Sivarama Prasad, Motoori Srirama Krishna, V.P.V. Ramesh, Ganti Narasimham and G.S. Murthy constited the organising committee of the function.
Vedula Subrahmanya Sastry, Kolavennu Malayavasini, Yeddanapoodi Ayyanna Panthulu, Muppana Venkata Rao, the Gandhi Centre secretary, K.S. Sastry, the leading advocate, Palepu Jaganmohini, and others spoke, felicitating G.S.N. Murthy.
The former Minister and MP, Bhattam Srirama Murthy, released the book. The BVK College lecturer, D.V. Surya Rao, reviewed the contents, especially, the articles on lack of national unity, universal religion, the true concept of democracy, the problem of reservations including the present day thinking of extending it to women, national department, Telugu theatre and so on.
