Reading the future

The first mobile-based magazine in the city will be launched on Sunday

BYTES OF INFORMATION Technocrats work on their magazine

A group of students from various colleges in the city is all set to ring in a change with a mobile phone-based multimedia magazine, which will be launched on Sunday.

The company behind this project, TNGicube, is perhaps one with the most number of students on their roll.

Couch potatoes might recognise this company as the brain behind ACV's 66777 short code. Ifuturz, a subsidiary of TNGicube, provides wireless managed data service to television channels and mobile operators in India.

The mobile-based multimedia magazine enables users to view text files, videos and photos directly on the mobile.

Portal for youth

"Our magazine is a portal for the youth to read and write about themselves," explains Kiran R, a third-year student of engineering at University College of Engineering, Kariyavattam. He is also lead creative content provider of HiMag, which will be released on Sunday.

"We plan to review hang-outs, eat-outs, mobikes and so on. And bringing it all condensed and compact to the mobile takes our venture one step ahead of competitors," says Rakesh V, chief operations officer of this venture.

"We have worked out a style that appeals to the youth," says Arjun Shekar, an artist for the e-magazine, who is also a final-year degree student of Mar Ivanious College. "We plan to go into print once it is accepted among the youngsters," says Anish Achutan who works for Ifuturz. Ifuturz also operates Hi Tv, an interactive on demand mobile TV service.

The e-magazine contains book reviews, movie trivia, quotes and so on. Mobile-based polls and `shouts' are also in the pipeline. HI hopes to spread their wings by covering various campus activities such as fetes, celebrations and competitions.

Download the magazine

The magazine can be downloaded from any GPRS-enabled java mobile phone by keying in HIMAG to the shortcode 66777.
