Travelling to legendary sites

Behave responsibly while visiting monuments

TO BEHOLD Old is gold

Heritage sites are wonderful places to head to for a holiday. It's a great package — beauty of the past, free and fun lessons on history and photo opportunities for amateur photographers. And in India, as in much of Asia, you don't have to go too far before you stumble over some fascinating old ruins. Many of theseare heritage sites, protected either by the Archaeological Survey of India or by the UESCO, or other bodies.

Culture tourism is a fast growing segment. That's both good news and bad. To make sure you don't add to the pollution, and vandalism of these sites here are a few dos and don'ts.

* Do not carry plastic bags to heritage sites. And if you have carried them, make sure you take them back with you. Getting your children to collect all your trash is a good way of making them environmentally conscious.

* Do some reading so that you make the most of your trip. Most sites will have government shops that stock some reading material. It's always fun to know a little more.

* Do not try to pick up pieces of rocks, or little `fragments of history'.

* Inscribing your name and that of your sweetheart's is not a very smart thing to do. Just remember if you don't marry her, you can never bring your new partner back there. And quite frankly, it's extremely irresponsible.* Choose a hotel that's is resource-conscious. And if an eco-hotel is not an option, or not feasible, make sure you are at your best behaviour.

* Most sites will have an official Government-run shop, buy your gifts there.
