Travelling to heritage sites
Heritage sites are a great package beauty of the past, free and fun lessons on history and photo opportunities for amateur photographers. And in India, you don't have to go too far before you stumble on some fascinating old place. Many of these, particularly the popular ones, are heritage sites, protected either by the Archaeological Survey of India or by the UNESCO, or other bodies.
Culture tourism is a fast growing segment. To make sure you don't add to the pollution, and vandalism of these sites here are a few dos and don'ts.
* Do not carry plastic bags to heritage sites. And if you have, make sure you take them back with you. Get your children to collect all your trash.
* Do some reading so that you make the most of your trip. Most sites will have government shops that stock reading material.
* Do not try to pick up pieces of rocks, or little `fragments of history'.
* Inscribing your name and that of your sweetheart's is not a very smart thing to do. Just remember if you don't marry her, you can never bring your new partner back there.
* Choose a hotel that's is resource-conscious. And if an eco-hotel is not an option, or not feasible, make sure you are at your best behaviour.
