MINCING NO WORDS Popular lyricist Jaladi
The popular film lyricist Jaladi has turned 75. A down-to-earth man he has penned over 1,500 songs for 275 films in a career spanning nearly four decades.
It was befitting that three cultural organizations - Gouri Art and Cultural Academy, Visakha Sahiti and Visakha Royal Cultural Academy - jointly conducted a function to felicitate the great lyricist at the VUDA Children's Theatre recently in Visakhapatnam
Starting with his first song Situkku... situkku, a folk number, from the film Palle Seema in which he drew an analogy between the contours of a woman's body and nature, he gave scores of hits.
The song Yathamesi thodina yeru yendadu, pogili pogili yedchina continues to haunt music lovers even 25 years after it was written. It portrays the travails in the lives of women. Jaladi's name became synonymous with the film and he subsequently came to be known as `Pranam Kharidu' Jaladi'. The song was the highlight of the film that incidentally was Megastar Chiranjeevi's second film but was released before his first one. Jaladi wrote two duets for Chiranjeevi' s debut film Punadiraallu.
"He touched upon all aspects of human life in his songs. He never compromised on values and was aware of his social responsibility as a song writer," says the Head of the Theatre Arts Department of Andhra University P. Bobby Vardhan. Punya bhoomi naa desam namo namami... from the film Major Chandrakant is a reflection of his patriotism.
He mooted the formation of an association to bring back senior artistes, be they actors, singers or musicians, to Visakhapatnam and work for developing the industry here. "Such an effort would go a long way in providing better opportunities to local youth," he says. "The greatest wealth I have earned is the goodwill of the people from Kadapa to Srikakulam districts," he says and adds: "Gun is required to save the nation and pen to save society. I am aware of my responsibility and wish to bring about reform through my pen."
