IKAT ATTRACTION Saris in bright hues on show
Art and Crafts Exposition (ACE), Bhubaneswar, is organising an exhibition-cum-sale of handicrafts and handlooms from Orissa, which opens today and will go on till August 27 at C. P. Art Centre, Eldams Road. ACE, a non-Government organisation, is dedicated to the development art and craft of the State. Through various programmes, it helps the weavers and artisans evolve as per the changing needs of the market.
Orissa's handwoven textiles are unparalleled in range and styles. The ikat saris are made mainly at Nuapatana near Cuttack and in the weaving centres in and around Sambalpur, Baragarh and Sonepur. The saris and dupattas in silk and cotton have an understated elegance about them.
As for the handicrafts, the State is famous for palm leaf engravings, patta paintings, silver filigree work, dhokra and appliqué work and stone carvings. The Orissa sculptors work with felicity on soapstone, the slightly harder greenish chlorite and hard black granite.
The giant-sized umbrellas with appliqué work from Pippili add colour to a garden. Pippili work involves cutting of colourful fabrics in the shape of flowers, birds and animals and stitching them artistically on coloured cloth. Heart-shaped fans, big and small canopies and wall hangings are available at the expo.
Silver filigree work is a fine example of artistic excellence of the State. Animals and birds, articles of daily use such as vermilion containers, brooches and earrings attract attention. Items in dhokra casting such as images of gods and goddesses, animals and human heads make ideal gifts. Pattachitra, the handcrafted paintings executed on cloth, using natural colours, is a big draw at the exhibition.
