"Trilogy" features the works of three youngsters

THROUGH THE LENS A work by Prasanna
The art works on show at the Lalit Kala Akademi till today offer different fare to viewers. They are conceptually evolved and represented in different mediums such as photography, installation, sculpture and painting. The artists behind the show titled "Trilogy" are Benita Perciyal, N. Prasanna and M. Siva.
Benita represents her gender identity of `self' through time tested objects serving as metaphors like the shuttle of a loom, embroidery, dining platters with ceramic sculptures of heads and collages. The seed seen in her collages gestures towards nurture of life. The shuttle is privileged as a feminine craft translating to a web of connectivity within family and transcending to symbolise the interconnectivity between the self and the supreme.
Prasanna mediates through the invented `eye' of the photographic lens to configure his identity, conflating his real self with the `imagined' one, which confronts him in a mirror or broken glass. Aside from creating multiple images of his self to interpolate as a subject of his social reality, Prasanna offers vignettes of his humdrum existence laced with humour in his series of prints that depict the humanised dog lying pliant between the ground and the step with a gaping crevice in between, juxtaposed with a moth-eaten notice on a door, a ceiling that has patterns left by the leaking roof, a rusty pedestal of the fan and a series of electric switches. Prasanna has playfully employed these images but they reveal the apathy of government in maintaining these institutions.
Siva's abstractions are a commentary on his inward journey, searching for an identity in the world of bricolage through his transgressive colours. But they represent a world given over to sensuous perceptions with their organic imagery. For Siva, this is a search to find his identity within a multitudinous reality as in the work where he represents a sodium vapour lamp with suffused light and within that complexity, he considers himself a single ray.
A thread of connectivity weaves the concepts of the three artists. Dominating the works is the notion of self reflexivity turning inwards to an image of the self and that self as constructed by culture.
