STRUTTING THEIR STUFF Prasad Bidapa's new models are a confident lot

Tyra Banks and the hunt for America's top model can pause for a while: Prasad Bidapa can give us a lot more. An evening charged with hope, potential, joy and sheer youth power bowled us over on Thursday night at The Park where the fashion guru launched the latest models from his stable.

The evening launched 15 new female and 25 male models and also showcased hair and makeup trends for fall/winter 2006.

It began with tips on the season's hairstyles offered in a live demo by stylists from Salon Squeeze. Models flaunted hair colours ranging from burgundy to fiery reds and shimmering blonde brunette tones. The styles and colours were by leading international brand Paul Mitchell and designed especially for Indian skins. As for makeup, apparently, glitter applied deftly by Gauri Kapur, is the theme for the season.

More oohs and aahs were to follow as a seemingly unending bevy of hopeful models strutted down the ramp. Then followed the MIB — all the male models looked sleek and stylish in wonderfully tailored black trousers and black shirts.

Celebrating the body beautiful, the girls showed off their assets while a couple of boys took off their shirts to catcalls and whistles. All that sweaty hard work in the gym needs appreciation, huh?

Some hope too

There was hope on offer for those who could not make it as ramp models; a select lot of showed off photogenic faces. If there were still any doubts among the audience — comprising chiefly of friends and family of the models — Bidapa offered proof by unleashing some of his models launched last year who have gone on to taste fame and success.

There was Shrutha Keerthi who acted in the latest Tamil release Kaadalae En Kaadalae, Roshan Isaac who starred in the Kannada hit Julie and Bidapa's nephew Carun Carambaiah who has bagged the Fair and Handsome contract. With such baits being dangled, the line of aspirants clearly will not dry up.

The grand finale was the announcement of the coveted prizes for both male and female models for various categories. Paul Mitchell sponsored the Best Hair awards that were won by Param and Simran, the Advaith Hyundai Body Beautiful awards were claimed by Archana and Preetham and The Park Hotel's Mr & Miss Photogenic titles were snapped up by Sitara and Zaid. Tara and Imtiaz walked away with the top titles of McDowell's Signature Model of the Year in the male and female categories.

For the final word on the event, we turned to former Miss India Rekha Hande (who was rooting for a friend's niece) and Charu Ramaiah, one of the city's most sought-after hairstylists. Their verdict: "Perky, confident — the newly-launched models have a lot of potential."
