Walk for a cause

A march for the U.N. International Day of Peace is being organised today

GOOD DEEDS Soroptimist International works with various charity organisations

Soroptimist International (SI) of Bangalore is organising a candlelit peace march from Cubbon Road, Minsk Square, up to the Mahatma Gandhi statue on M.G. Road from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. today to commemorate U.N. International Day of Peace. Hotel Royal Orchid Central on Dickenson Road, is the starting point. The hotel also offers courtesies throughout the way.

Soroptimist, meaning "best for women," is a network of women from diverse professions. The organisation is dedicated to improving the life for women and children through service projects.

SI started with a batch of 80 dedicated women in 1921 at Oakland, California, but now has over 95,000 members worldwide, in 3,000 clubs across 125 countries. SI Bangalore works for local, national and international communities through awareness, advocacy and action, and international goodwill and understanding.

It takes up various projects related to training, education and health and is involved withSeva Sadan, Doddabelavangala, Sumanahalli HIV/AIDS and Leprosy Rehabilitation Centre, Rehabilitation Centre for released Women Prisoners managed by Prison Ministry India, Unnati SGBS Trust for vocational training of underprivileged youth, Kushal Foundation which provides medical services in various slum areas, facilitating Kamala Srinivasan's participation in the World Masters Athletic Competition in Spain in August 2005, St. Benedict's School, Kumbalgod, a school for children of daily wage earners and farmers, Child Care, a learning centre for slum children in Kammanahalli and We Care, a centre for education of children in the below-the-poverty line category.
