PURNA YOGA
Yoga Guru Suneel Singh
Rs.150, H.S. communications (DVD)
With more and more people getting fitness conscious these days, the ancient Indian practice of yoga has surely benefited a lot. With more and more people going the yoga way, more and more yoga gurus too can also be spotted offering their service to TV viewers, newspaper and magazine readers, through personalised door-to-door training, in outdoor sessions and even through how-to home videos. Yoga guru Suneel Singh too has taken the same path. His yoga teachings have been aired by many channels while his articles have been published by quite a few newspapers. Armed with a yoga teacher training course under well-known yoga guru Dhirendra Brahmachari, Singh has now come up with this home video for those who want to utilise yoga to gain health benefits.
The DVD starts with an introduction to yoga and then goes on to showing a series of asanas to enhance one’s self confidence, memory and an overall healthy life. Also, he has culled a few asanas for those who are stressed at work and those suffering from insomnia and depression.
Though this DVD is not enough to master the art of yoga it can surely help you in introducing you to the great world of yoga and healthy living.
MIZMAAR SITARA
Universal Music India, Rs.150 (CD)
Mizmaar is the latest Pakistani band to come to India with their debut album Sitara. The members of the band are veterans in Pakistani music scenario, so they know how to make saleable music. And this doesn’t necessarily mean great music but th
ey have tried to be different nevertheless. The album has 14 tracks, out of which two are remix versions and one acoustic version of the title song.
“Barson” and “Sitara” are clearly picks of the album. Very hummable, the former has a strong piano base while the latter has a strong rock feel. The soul-touching lyrics by poet Sabir Zafar adds to the beauty of the songs. The very usual “Hai Pyar Kya” follows next. The Deep Purple influence is quite evident in tracks “Pal” and “Ajnabi”. The lyrics of this Pal remind of KK’s “Pyaar ke Pal”. “Logon Ko Rehne Do” is passable but “Pani Pe Tasweer” and “Sajna” are worthy a listen. Here you can see Blues element seeping in. “Jana Na Tha”, “Teri Yadein” and “Dil Ki Tarah” are the other tracks.
JHOOM
Tips, Rs.109
Coming from the Art of Living the album’s aim is to spread spirituality around the world. There are ten songs sung by Hema Sardesai. In the first two numbers “Power of Life” and “Shiv Shambo”, Hema has used a very pronounced foreign accent, presumably to appeal to the foreigner interested in Indian spirituality. “Power of Life” was especially produced for the AOL Women’s Conference ’07. Hema returns to Indian accent with songs like “Dum Dum”, “Gopala” and “Durga Maa” but still there is heavy influence of western instruments. The lyrics are meaningful and Hema’s voice sounds fresh. An interesting attempt to take spirituality and religious symbols to today’s youth or as Hema introduces it: A fashionable groove to modern spirituality.
