DESIGN REHWA showcases some fine works by its weavers
|
WEFT AND WEAVE The collection is delightfully designed
The colour palette runs from soft blue and pink to vibrant red and mustard. Block prints can be seen on interesting weaves. Vegetable dyes add a charm of their own. The textural magic of tussar and Maheswari borders gives REHWA’s winter collection a dramatic look. Every hand woven sari reflects Mira Sagar’s signature style – one that’s simple and subtle.
The tussar saris and fabric in natural colours are stunning. They come with striped or zigzag patterns with pallus providing visual contrasts. The cotton silks with typical woven Maheshwari borders come in varied hues. The dupattas in gauzy cotton-silk with matching block printed fabric also come in a range of colours and contrasts. Here again, Sagar’s impeccable design sense stands out. Many of the block prints are done in vegetable dyes.
Mira’s stoles come in soft silk, cotton and sheer. Again, the magic of bold block prints made fabulous statements. Khadi imprints on tissue and silk was another interesting touch by the designer.
REHWA is a non profit society which provides employment, marketing and design development support to the traditional weavers of Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. The exhibition is on at Fabindia, Woods Road, Ilford House, till December 23.
