Designer deities come home
|
D’mart Exclusif recently introduced a collection of Worldwide Limited Editions of Indian deities in sterling silver and porcelain. Though conceptualised in India, they have been crafted in Italy, Spain and Germany. Besides the commonly foun
d deities, included in the collection are Vishwaroopa, a representation of the all-encompassing form of Vishnu, Balaji in colour and black, Vighneshwara, Ghanteswar, Sai Baba and Mahavir. A full Ram Durbar with Hanuman, Ram, Lakshman and Sita is also on offer. Varying in size from 22 cm to 188, these deities are priced from Rs.15000 to 1.14 lakhs
Says K.V. Rao, Chairman, d’mart Exclusif, “We give the concept on paper and they turn them into three-dimensional pieces.” But the non-Indian artists don’t get the ‘right faces’ immediately. “It took us three years to get Durga and 20 months for Balaji. Because Ganesha, Lakshmi and Krishna are more known deities, they take eight months,” he says.
Rao says, “Indian workers can’t do mass production and don’t have infrastructure to paint on silver and decorate with Swarovski. Now we are planning to build the infrastructure here to produce these deities in India.”
