Something to hum about At the CD release of “Vellithirai”

The venue, the Taj Coromandel, brimmed with stars. Actor-producer Prakash Raj was at the entrance to receive the guests. The cast of “Vellitherai” Prithviraj and Lakhsmi Rai were also seen. After a brief mention about the making of the f ilm, the rest of the evening was dedicated to felicitate music directors Viswanathan-Ramamurthy. When the duo arrived at the venue people flocked to them and clicked pictures with their camera phones. Some of the everlasting melodies composed by the duo were sung by children. S. P. Balasubramanian spoke at length about how he was chosen to sing for them. “Learn Tamil and come, we will certainly give you chance to sing. After singing for them I earned name and fame. I owe my singing career to these greats,” he said.

P. B. Sreenivas penned a few verses in praise of the music legends. Compere Swarnamalya said it was a laudable gesture by Prakash Raj to honour the duo at the at the cassette release function of his film. Prakash Raj said the whole unit of his Duet Movies including director Viji wanted to conduct the function in this manner. Replying to the felicitation, M. S. Viswanathan said they were happy to be among the present crop of young musicians. “All of them are doing a good job. It was my elder brother Ramamurthy who showed me the path and I walked on it without any problem.”

Lyricists Vairamuthu, music director Vidhyasagar and others spoke too. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal released the CDs of “Vellithirai”. There are a couple of firsts in the album. This is Duet Music’s first product. It includes the Karoake versions for those who want to sing along. There are five songs and each one is melodious. The music is scored by G. V. Prakash Kumar.

“Suriyane” (written by Yugabharathi), sung by Lucky Ali and Rahul Nambiar, is the pick of the album. Thanks to the meaningful lyrics. The lively “Uyirile” written by Na. Muthukumar and sung by Naresh Iyer is sure to be a hit with the masses. Shreya Ghosal, who pronounces Tamil words well, has sung “Thaiyare Thaiya” penned by Kabilan. “Vizhiyile” sung by Chitra and written by Pazhani Bharathi is another good number. Chitra makes the song memorable with her remarkable rendition. Jassi Gift and Chitra sing “Kanjipaanaiyin”, again written by Kabilan.
