International Women's Day was celebrated on March 8. The global agenda is to put women and women's rights to equality. International Women's Day took off in 1913 and 1917 when women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with their sisters.

Since then, much progress has been made for women in developed and developing countries alike. March 8, provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the achievements of women and to highlight the needs and concerns of all women. Some of the issues faced by women in India and other countries concern health care for women, refugee women and the suffering caused to them in armed conflict and poverty.

What can you as students do to ensure women's rights and equality. Your immediate answer may be, "Not much". But that's not true. The Hindu's Sunday Magazine dated March 10 carries articles on women and their fight for equality. Have a class discussion on -

Women in armed conflict. Victim, perpetrators or simply survivors.

Have women broken all barriers in employment?

Find out if your school/class can link up with the local NGO to work among the children studying in the corporation schools or schools meant for the lower income groups. Talking to these children you may be able to create an awareness in them. And children always carry the message home.
