Has modern technology changed the teacher-student relationship?
|
Great expectations...
Aristotle once said "They who educate children are to be honoured more than those who bear them, for these only give life, those the art of living well."
The teacher-student relationship has been defined as one of discipline, loyalty and generosity. But the advent of modern technology has taken a toll of these virtuous qualities and they have been replaced by a purely materialistic approach.
Where have our traditional values gone? Parents send their wards to schools and assume that all responsibility of their ward now lies with the school. The supposed-to-be role models in schools are busy with their pecuniary interests.
Are teachers, inculcating the right values? Can our educational system cater to the educational, intellectual, emotional, social, physical and moral needs of the child? Are we preparing them to meet the needs and demands of an ever changing society?
If we, as teachers, are not teaching them properly, which is the basis of our relationship with the students, it indicates a communication gap. When we talk of student-teacher relationship, what comes to mind is students in the classroom pouring over large volumes andthe teacher dictating notes. Is this what education is all about? No, but that is what we have been reduced to. Educators need to create a system based on vision and values. Quality education is expected before anything can be expected of the students.
Teachers hold the key to unlocking the potential of the child. It is easy to produce bookworms but difficult to produce literate and well-developed individuals.
