A visual feast
A film made for children is usually synonymous with fun, joy and excitement. A children's film festival sounds great and if one is fortunate enough to be selected as a delegate for this festival, boy is he lucky!
The international children's film festival is hosted once every two years in Hyderabad. In 2001, I was lucky enough to be selected as a delegate.
There were a lot of short films and many were animated. One of these films was a film about Marco-Polo, which really fascinated me. There were quite a number of Indian films and "Bhago-Bhooth" was by far my favourite Indian film. It was a story about a village kid and the relationship he shares with a stranger who leads a life of solitude in the village forests, away from people. "The Falconer" was a great movie, technically brilliant. It won an award in the International children's jury section. A few other films that fascinated me greatly were "Ra-Tim-Bum Castello," a film about witches, wizards, castles and fantasies, "Nagisa", a story describing the life of a Japanese girl from a middle class family and "Nanu", a sweet little film from India.
Then there were the Irani films that would be boring from an average Indian's point of view, but I felt that these films were great. The way the story revolves round simple incidents, and the natural action of the artists was amazing.
I got a chance to fire some questions at the directors and producers of the movies that were being screened and I even made friends with some of them. I also got a chance to give out my views on the films to the press. I was excited when I saw myself on T.V.
The festival, after a week of fun, bid farewell with a little programme and a promise from the C.M. that the next festival would be held in the new film complex.
I shall have to wait till 2003 for the festival. Till then, these memories will hopefully haunt me!
