Heard of cat-sitting?

It was a pleasant morning. My neighbour stood at the gate wearing an unusual smile. She told me that they were on a trip to Lucknow for a week, and drew out a cat from a basket and asked whether I could look after it. Before I could say anything she left it in my hands and walked off.

The cat was cute and her eyes twinkled with obedience and love. But she behaved exactly the other way round. She messed the hall with wet paw prints, scratched the sofa and broke the glass articles. She even invited the stray cats from the neighbourhood. One day she lay on my bed refusing to get up and dozed off leaving me awake on the ground.

I yearned for my neighbour to return. She did at last! And I was ready at the gate with the cat. She asked me whether there was any trouble. I said I loved having her. "Is that so?" she said. "Then she will be safe in your hands when we are off to the U.S. for a year. I will drop her by next week." I stood dumb-stricken.
