Bravo

It was just six days after we had shifted to a beautiful, newly built house, in the deserted outskirts of the city. There was a phone call late one evening from Tiruchi saying that my grandfather was seriously ill. My parents had to leave immediately. They left me with a lot of instructions. I couldn't go with them because of my exams.

After they left, time seemed to drag on. I felt very frightened and didn't know how I was going to spend the night, all alone. Every small noise frightened me. The curtains moving in the breeze made me jump up in fright. The insects hitting against the window pane made me scream. There was a power failure also. I saw two agate eyes which chilled my blood. I thought it was a ghost. I chanted the prayers my mother had taught me. I heard a Mew! It was a stray cat. As I was taking a deep sigh, with the cat on my lap, the door shook. A tall hefty man stepped in. I had forgotten to bolt after my parents had left. I slowly crept behind him, picked up the iron rod which was left near the door by the gardener. I hit him with it. The man fell unconscious. I quickly locked the door from outside and sat in the portico. I was happy to see our car turning into the drive. My father had left my mum and had returned. I excitedly told my dad that I had knocked down a robber. As we opened the door, power came. My father was shocked to see the man on the floor... he was none other than the watchman we had appointed the previous day. I felt very foolish.
