Education for girls
The question to consider, actually, is why has education NOT been made compulsory for girls in India? Of late, education has been made practically free for girls right up to the SSC level. Why not make it compulsory? Perhaps, this is the reason why more than half the population of girls up to the age of 14 still remains uneducated.
An uneducated girl in the 21st Century is a tragedy for the home, the State and the Nation. It is surprising that our lawmakers have so far not awakened to this horrible fact. Parents, especially in rural areas, should be penalised for not sending their girls to school. It is generally felt in villages that a girl need not be educated as, anyhow, she has to move into another family after marriage, where she has to look after the home and nothing else. Hence, the education of girls in village is, as a rule, neglected.
If a woman is uneducated, she cannot mould mature and wise citizens for the nation. Illiteracy, as it is, is a curse. If a woman is educated, she will be able to teach good things to her children. She will be able to take up a decent job and work to supplement the family income. But more than this, education can give her a sense of stability and security.
Women all over the world have suffered a lot because they have been left to remain uneducated. If people were given a choice, they would prefer to leave their women uneducated. It is only the government, with suitable laws, which can ensure universal education. Isn't it time, then, that education is made compulsory for women in India?
