Remembering a boy

A three-year-old boy was leaning on the door. He was very hungry. His father was reading a newspaper in a nearby room. His mother was working busily in the kitchen. He called out, "Amma." His mother did not hear the little boy's cry. Again he tried, but in vain. He tried twice, thrice, but his mother did not hear him. Then suddenly the boy got an idea. He called out to his mother by her name, "Renni." He had heard his aunt call his mother by that name. Down came the thrashing from his father's cane. The mother wrapped her baby with her arms for protection. The father scolded the child for calling his mother by her name. The child cried hugging his mother for a long time.

When he became older, his memory of the beating was still fresh in his mind. He told his father this and he realised his mistake. He never repeated it afterwards.

The boy who got the thrashing was none other than myself.
