Stiff experience

One evening I returned home ravenously hungry after a hectic day at school. My mother was out shopping. So I decided to raid the kitchen to satisfy my hunger. I noticed a vessel full of kheer on the kitchen table. Kheer is a delicacy, which always makes my mouth water. I tasted a spoonful. It needed more sugar. I took a large helping of the kheer in a bowl, sprinkled sugar liberally on it and began eating it. It was simply delicious. In no time the kheer was over.

My mother returned home shortly afterwards. She went into the kitchen and within minutes I heard her cry out: " Who has thrown away all the starch that I had prepared for my cotton sarees?" Suddenly I realised that the "delicacy" which I had consumed as kheer was in fact the maida-starch mixture that my mother had prepared to use on her cotton sarees.

I sheepishly confessed to my mother and she had a hearty laugh as she heard me out. To this day whenever anyone mentions "kheer" I immediately recall the incident and get stiff as starch.
