Memorable day out
It was two years ago when we had this unforgettable experience. My father, mother, sister Ashwini, my uncle, aunt, two cousins and I went to Amaravati dam.
My father had a friend there who had arranged for a fishing boat on which we could cross the dam water. Nobody was allowed to go boating in the dam as it was protected water used for drinking in the town of Udumalpet. Soon we were off in the boat on a vast sheet of water. When we were halfway inside, my father asked the boatman how deep the water was. He said it was about 60 feet. I was really scared.
After about one hour and 15 minutes we reached the catchment area of the dam, diagonally opposite the wall. We saw a stream of crystal clear water flowing into the dam. There was nobody around us for miles. The silence was great. There was also a fear in our hearts that we were alone.
We enjoyed the lunch we had taken. Then we had a bath in the cool crystal clear water. Suddenly, I saw a large dung of some animal. The boatman said it was the dung of elephants. Immediately we packed our bags and got into the boat and started moving. Suddenly we spotted a few crocodiles on the shore. One of them waved its tail and the force was shocking. We were relieved to see that we were slowly reaching the dam edge.
Then we went to a crocodile farm nearby. There the keeper picked up a tiny crocodile which was only a foot long. It was so ferocious that it bit the iron gate with a cracking sound and refused to leave it. I realised how powerless we were when compared to nature. This experience was so gut-wrenching that whenever I think of it, my stomach begins to churn.
