The choice of companions
It has been said that man is known by the company he keeps.
If he is constantly seen with men who are frivolous and idle, others will look upon him also as frivolous and idle and with good reason. The friendship of a good person is one of the greatest blessings.
The serious, hard-working man, with a definite aim in life, does not have time for frivolity nor will he have much sympathy or admiration for those who fritter away their lives in senseless pleasures.
He who deliberately chooses friendship with evil, must find some attraction in evil.
However good he may be to begin with, he is sure to deteriorate.
A boy may have been brought up to scorn a lie and to look upon dishonesty with contempt. But if he associates constantly with those who habitually lie and steal, who treat his scruples contemptuously and by their vicious practices often gain an advantage over him, he will find it exceedingly difficult to resist their influence.
Considering therefore the injuries that accrue from last associates and the benefits to be gained from worthy friends, it is clear that care should be exercised in the choice of companions.
Everyone should aim at making friends with the best possible men.
