Ownership of outer space
This was the topic of discussion at the Michigan State University Model United Nations Conference. I had the opportunity to participate in this.
Man started to destroy himself by conducting war in land, sea and air. As if this was not enough, he now wants to wage the wars in space. Since humankind first began exploring outer space, space science and technology and their applications have had enormous benefits for education, health, environmental monitoring, and management of natural resources, disaster management, meteorological forecasting, satellite navigation and communications.
But the idea to have a military base in space will prove to be fatal. Things like space strike or orbital bombardment weapon systems, anti-satellite weapon systems (ASAT) and ballistic missile defence (BMD) weapon system which are to strike land, sea or air targets, destroy enemy satellites and destroy incoming ballistic missiles before they reach their intended targets respectively are of no use to anyone.
The UN has also made multilateral efforts by establishing treaties to form guidelines for peaceful use of outer space The problems that would be created if military systems were based in space are:
The ownership of outer space will help them show off their technologies but the countries without any advancement might always be under the danger of being affected by the enemy weapons. All the countries are not developed and one of the main obstacles is their economy. Their resources are diverted into these useless discoveries of weapons.
It is not that there should be no progress in space. It is only that a global framework should be established that offers security for progress in space by integrating the existing legal instruments and at the same time facilitating the innovation in space law and see that outer space is used only for peaceful purposes.
The developments and the information from outer space should be shared with all the member countries of the UN and steps should be taken to put it in positive way of use.
