Boron deficiency in papaya

PAPAYA FRUIT (Caria Papaya) is susceptible to leaf curl and mosaic disease. Infected fruits suffer from Boron deficiency. This can be identified from the bumps that appear on the deformed fruit with rough surface, which turn yellow later.

When the fruit is cut open, affected areas are found to have pithy wood which is tasteless.

All plants grown in a particular area were found to be infection-prone.

Boron deficiency can be rectified with foliar spray of 0.25 per cent borax twice or 0.5 per cent borax as basal application in two split doses at fortnightly intervals.

Deformed fruits cannot be brought back to original shape but fruits produced after treatment have normal shape and size. M.Ramakrishna and K. Purushotham
