Low frequency tapping system

A NEW system of tapping rubber trees, which would reduce the cost of production of natural rubber has been developed by scientists at Rubber Institute of India, Kottayam. The new system increases the annual production of rubber.

The new system envisages tapping the trees once in a week instead of the present system of tapping once in three days in high yielding varieties of rubber trees.

For tapping rubber trees once in a week in high-yielding variety of RRII 105, scientists have recommended the application of a yield stimulant — ethephon, in the bark above the tapping panel of rubber trees.

Application of stimulant once in 2 weeks should be continued for 2 years in the beginning of adoption of the new system of tapping. Ethephon should be at 2.5 per cent.

After two years the frequency of application of stimulant can be reduced to once in a month.

The system can also be adopted in rubber trees, which are now following the conventional method of tapping, but the application of ethepton should be done in these trees also and in the recommended dose.

Rubber trees which are under the new tapping system should be rain guarded and tapping should be even during rains without any break.

There should be no interruption in treating the trees and if missed the treatment should be done the very next day of missing it to enjoy its full benefit.
